REAL LIFE CONNECTIONS - Adult Education

    Take one or all of our new and exciting 12 week classes!
    Prior computer skills are not necessary.
    Basic computer skills will be taught during each class activity.
    Everyone works at their own pace.

    Staffing: Classes are taught by Special Educators and Assistive Technology Specialists and offer a variety of activities for every session!

    MONDAY CLASSES


    12/7/09 - 2/22/10
    TECH-Y 10 am - 3 pm
    Held at the Red Bank YMCA
    Instructor: Melissa Drew, MS, Special Educator

    Join us for a day of independent opportunities for adults with special needs to enjoy time within the community in various areas of the Red Bank YMCA. FRA will provide programming to strengthen independence and build social skills. Activities include:

    Computer Classes to encourage independent thinking skills, reading, etc.
    Discussion of current events
    X-er Game Room to work on balance, eye-hand coordination, following directions, etc.
    Swim in heated pool for exercise
    Social lunch in the YMCA community center
    (Bring your own lunch)

    We encourage students to bring money to purchase drinks or snacks via vending machines to work on money skills.

    Skill Requirements for Registration:
    Can transition from one task to another easily
    Can follow direction independently
    Can maneuver through YMCA with minimal assistance (students will have community interaction as they transition from activities)
    Can dress independently
    No wandering or behavior challenges


    WEDNESDAY CLASSES


    12/16/09 - 3/10/10
    Self Awareness (YOGA) 9 am - 10 am
    Instructor: Susan Tudor, Certified Yoga Instructor

    Develop relaxation, balance, focus, stretching and gentle exercise in this class.

    Amazing Stories Computer Class 10 am - 12 pm
    Instructor: Melissa Drew, MS, Special Education Teacher

    This 2-part program provides opportunities to strengthen reading and writing skills. In part 1 learn to use electronic books to read a story or have a story read to you. Share your favorite parts of the story with classmates and learn to identify character, setting and plot. Many books are available based on reading level and interest. Part ll reviews basic grammar and sentence structure and offers simple creative writing activities.

    Life Skills Lunch Class 12 - 1 pm
    Instructor: Melissa Drew, MS, Special Education Teacher

    Students will utilize our kitchen to make lunch. Focus will be on food preparation and nutrition. Students will plan lunch menus for the class. Students will learn independence at the microwave and toaster oven. Cost of food is included.

    Money & More Computer Class 1pm - 3pm
    Instructor: Melissa Drew, MS, Special Education Teacher

    Using computer programs, board games and functional activities, this 12 week program works with basic money skills; coin identification, making change and making a simple budget. New this year, additional topics covered include telling time and reading schedules, as well as simple forms of solid and liquid measurement. (feet, inches, pints, quarts, etc.)
